  • Happy Gas for Anxious, Nervous & Scared Patients in Sydney

What is Happy Gas?

  • Happy gas is nitrous oxide
  • Some patients experience euphoria (intense excitement or happiness) when they receive nitrous oxide, which is why it is also known as laughing gas.

Who is Happy Gas for?

  • A child who is anxious and nervous about dental treatment because of fear of the unknown and being too young to understand what is being done and explained by grown-ups
  • An adult who is also anxious and nervous about the prospect of dental treatment due to past bad dental experience or childhood dental trauma
  • An adult who cannot overcome the psychological impact of bad childhood dental experience with previous dentists
  • An adult who develops a fear of having dental injections or dental procedures
  • An adult with white coat syndrome

How is Happy Gas Delivered?

  • Giving happy gas is a way to help reduce pain, anxiety & fear during dental treatment
  • The gas is given through a small nosepiece (nasal mask), and the patient will be awake throughout the procedure
  • The patient will still be aware of what is happening around them, but will feel calm, dreamy and floaty, warm, and have tingling in their hands and feet
  • The patient may be a little forgetful and sleepy and might not be able to remember the procedure afterwards

How to Prepare for Happy Gas Procedure?

  • Signed written consent prior
  • Fasting 2 hours prior to procedure
  • The patient can have a light meal, like jelly, soup, noodle, congee and a drink two hours before the procedure.
  • The patient usually recovers quickly from the effects of the gas after their dental treatment has been completed.

Alternatives to Happy Gas

  • Prevention is better than cure: early education to expectant parents to prevent childhood decays and for parents and child to achieve meticulous home care oral hygiene
  • Familiarisation visits for children prior to actual dental procedure
  • Distraction techniques, desensitisation techniques
  • Oral medication prior to procedure
  • Twilight sedation via intravenous sedation
  • Full sedation via general anaesthesia at a hospital
