How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

  • The active ingredient in most teeth whitening gels is some form of hydrogen peroxide (HP). Oxygen molecules from the peroxide penetrate into the enamel and oxidizes the darker pigmented stains within the tooth. This process bleaches the underlying tooth to a lighter color.

3 Types of Teeth Whitening

  • 1- In-office teeth whitening (TW) of vital teeth

  • 2- Take-home teeth whitening (TW) of vital teeth

  • 3- internal whitening of non-vital teeth

Should You Whiten Your Teeth?

  • Before choosing to whiten your teeth, it is important to see a dentist to determine if your teeth are suitable for the treatment.

  • TW is not recommended for everyone because of various issues relating to gum and tooth sensitivity, the natural colour of a person’s teeth and presence of fillings, crowns and veneers and other existing conditions like acid erosion, hypomineralisation and fluorosis.

What Will You Feel During and After TW Procedure?

  • Some people notice a 'bubbly' sensation on the surface of their teeth, or periods of sharp pain or electric shock like pain or "zingers" inside a tooth while the bleaching agent is in contact with their teeth.

  • Others notice an achy feeling in their teeth for a few days following the treatment and temporarily heightened sensitivity when biting into certain foods and consuming cold beverages.

  • You should report any painful sensations to your dentist.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

  • Dens in Dente have 2 types of in-office TW:

  • 1. Philips Zoom WhiteSpeed
  • 2. Opalescence

  • Both treatments are designed to lighten the colour of your teeth using a combination of whitening gel and a visible blue LED light at the same time to produce maximum whitening results in the shortest possible time.
  • 1. Philips Zoom uses 25%HP gel
  • 2. Opalescence uses 40-45%HP gel

  • For both procedures, whitening gel will be applied to your teeth and your teeth will be exposed to the light from either:

  • 1. Zoom WhiteSpeed lamp for up to 4 cycles of 15-minute sessions, or;
  • 2. SDI Radii Plus lamp for up to 4 cycles of 16-minute sessions

  • We will stop at 3rd cycle if you complain of hypersensitivity throughout the 3 cycles.

Combined TW Treatments

  • Combined treatments of in-office and take-home kits are best for teeth with:
  • severe discolouration
  • tetracycline staining - depending on severity can take up to extra 4-12 months of daily use
  • hypomineralisation
  • acid erosion

What Should You Prepare Before In-Office TW?

  • You should brush your teeth with either Sensodyne or Colgate Sensitive Pro toothpaste 7-14 days prior
  • You should not make the appointment a day before a major event or occasion e.g. a wedding, family and school reunion, etc.
  • You should not make the appointment a day before you are due to flight out for a conference or holiday or before you move interstate or overseas

What Should You Prepare After In-Office TW?

  • You should brush your teeth with either Colgate Sensitive Pro or Sensodyne tooth paste for 7-14 days afterwards
  • You should be ready to cope with gum and tooth sensitivity that may last a few days up to a few weeks depending on how your teeth react to the gels in a unique way
  • You should report to your dentist promptly any severe reaction or sensitivity which is not relief by Panadol and Nurofen or with tooth-brushing and mouth rinsing

Take-Home Teeth Whitening

  • We use a number of TW brands for take-home kits.
  • A set of bleaching trays is made perfectly tailored to your teeth
  • You will need to wear the trays for at least 30 minutes to 1 hour during the day or overnight, depending on your unique circumstances
  • Depending on how much whitening will be required, your treatment time will last 1-4 weeks or much longer
  • ***The best result comes with a direct contact of the gels onto the facial surfaces of your teeth via bleaching trays or a pen***

Top-Up TW Options @ Dens in Dente

Internal Bleaching of Non-Vital Tooth

  • It requires min. 2 appointments, or more if required
  • Each appointment will be 2 weeks apart

What to Avoid During TW Treatment?

  • Extrinsic stains are superficial stains found on the surface of the tooth, which are caused by dental plaque, tars (in tobacco), tannins, coloured foods and frequent use of certain mouthwashes.

  • Common food and drinks that stain teeth include:
  • • herbal and black tea
  • • coffee
  • • red wine
  • • spicy food
  • • any food or drinks that contain food colouring

  • Extrinsic stains on the teeth’s surfaces can be removed by a dentist performing a professional scale and polish.

How Long Does TW Result Last?

The optimal regimen to obtain persistence of tooth whitening is: 1- to follow an in-office TW treatment with periodic take-home TW touch-up. 2- to follow a take-home TW treatment with periodic at-home TW touch-up. The frequency of at-home TW touch-up is dependent on the rate of relapse, the frequency and consumption of certain diet.
