Who Needs a Professional Interpreter?
Patients from all types of non-English speaking backgrounds are most welcome at Dens in Dente.
It is not appropriate to provide treatment without a valid informed consent, and in some situations, this requires the use of a professional interpreter.
To ensure that a valid consent is obtained, a professional interpreter will be required to accompany any non-English speaking patients in accordance with NSW Health Policy Directive on the use of interpreters.
A professional interpreter should be present to ensure you as a patient can consent and have a clear knowledge and understanding when a recommendation for surgery, treatment is communicated to you.
The consent form signed by a non-English speaking patient must contain a statement signed by the Interpreter that he/she has interpreted the content of the form and all the information supplied by the treating practitioner to the patient.
Consent for dental treatment may not be valid if it is obtained through a child or family members, other patients, family friends, visitors or non-accredited staff at Dens in Dente acting as interpreters.
Dens in Dente Dental Care are unable to accept family members, friends and relatives and dental staff as the interpreter.
For simple and minor dental treatments, the dentist may agree to treat patients with limited English who share the same native language with the dentist.
However, for major, complex dental treatments, a dental treatment will not be carried out until a professional interpreter is engaged to ensure informed consent is properly obtained.

What Are Major, Complex Dental Treatments?
- Orthodontics including traditional orthodontics (using metal brackets) and modern orthodontics (using clear aligners like Invisalign)
- Dental implants
- Simple extractions that have potential to turn into a minor oral surgery with risks and complications
- Minor oral surgery
- Multiple crowns and bridgework
- Overdentures, even partial &/or complete dentures in some circumstances
- Root canal therapy (RCT) in multi-rooted molar teeth
- Full mouth re-build of broken down, worn-out teeth to restore function and cosmetic appearance
- Any dental treatment that gives rise to a lot of material risks &/or other procedural risks and complications
- Any dental treatments for patients with chronic ill health or complex medical problems who require multi-disciplinary team co-ordination and communication
When Should You Engage A Professional Interpreter?
- You won’t be able to understand the dentist when we explain about your dental problems, treatment options, risks and complications where a lot of dental terminology will be used if:
- 1- If you as a patient are unable to understand and answer simple Qs and follow conversations in everyday basic English, or:
- 2- If your child needs a check-up or any type of dental treatment but either or both your child and you as his/her parents are unable to understand or answer simple Qs or converse with the dentist in basic everyday English, or;
- 3- If your child or you as a patient get confused about basic English dental terms like lips, cheeks, gums, tongue, teeth, which teeth, which side, what is gum, and so on.
- 4- if your child is unable to understand basic instructions in English from the dentist. During a dental procedure for your child, speed and efficiency are essential and time is critical. All 3 elements will be lost in an emergency if we have to convey our instructions to a child patient via their parent and are slowed down by the delayed translation across the child to the parent back to the dentist and vice versa.
- Because of this limited or lack of understanding and comprehension, you won't be able to provide an informed consent for any dental treatment. This will render your consent invalid should an adverse event occur.
- Therefore, all dentists at Dens in Dente Dental Care reserve our right to refuse to see you or your child if you decline to engage a professional interpreter for any dental consultation, examination and treatment.
How to Contact Interpreter Services
The cost of interpreting services must be paid for by the patient or his/her person responsible or his/her parent or his/her charity or his/her government clinic/hospital or his/her employer, not by Dens in Dente Dental Care.
It is the responsibility of the patient or his/her person responsible or his/her parent to engage a professional interpreter and to organise their dental appointment in such a way to allow the attendance of the interpreter onsite.

They provide interpreting and translation services for private health care practices.
In exceptional circumstances, at the absolute discretion of the principal dentist, we may agree to accept reverse charged calls from the interpreter of TIS National that are initiated by the non-English speaking patients.
In such exceptional circumstances, Dens in Dente Client ID with TIS National will be disclosed upon prior request.
